Experiencing the Canadian Way of Life

The family has now been here for nearly two months and they are getting settled into the Canadian way of life …in this time they have had experience of our famous Montreal winters, a trip to Ikea, maple taffy and their French is coming along, thanks to daily French classes. They are also learning that sun does not mean warm! We have got to know the family really well and we spend most weekends and evenings in the week with plenty of visits. Jamal and Hiba are very loving parents to their two boys Ayham and Ahmed. Jamal is a very resourceful man who wants nothing but a safe and secure place to bring up his family and the opportunity to work so that he can provide for his family long term. He likes to spend time jogging and regularly goes out running in the streets of his new home city. He was a barber in Syria and has already cut our son’s hair for us and is keen to see if he can do this in Canada. Hiba his wife is a fun and relaxed mum who is also a great cook. She has already taught us how to cook rice the Syrian way and to make Fatoush. Most weekends we will cook together sharing recipes and ideas – her dream is to be able to cook in a restaurant. Both their families are still in Syria and Hiba in particular misses her own mum. Ayham and Ahmed are typical boisterous boys, 2 and 4. They are full of laughter and love playing outside in the snow or running around their apartment.
